Replacing the seal in the lower timing belt cover (BMW X5 E53)

The replacement of the seal in the lower timing cover must be carried out in the following order. Prepare the tools "11.1.210", "11.1.212", "11.5.110", "11.6.470" and "11.6.490". Remove the torsional vibration damper and install the "11.1.212" device on the end of the crankshaft.

Screw in the device "11.1.210" (Fig. 6.52) until it firmly engages with the seal. Screw in the bolt (1) to remove the seal.

Attention! It is strictly forbidden to touch the working edge of the new seal with your fingers.


Install the device "11.6.470" on the crankshaft and lubricate it with engine oil. Move the new oil seal along the device "11.6.470" until the oil seal touches the timing belt cover and remove it.

Screw the tool "11.6.490" (Fig. 6.53) into the crankshaft and tighten it.

Install the "11.5.110" device on the crankshaft. Using it and the central nut of the "11.6.490" device, install the oil seal flush into the timing belt cover.

Assemble the engine and check it for leaks.
