Adjusting the valve timing of the left cylinder head (BMW X5 E53)

            0

The valve timing adjustment of the left cylinder head on the 5–8 cylinder side must be carried out in the following order. Prepare the tools "11.9.190", "11.9.460" "11.9.461", "11.9.462" and "11.9.463".

Perform the preparatory operations described in the subsection "Checking the valve timing of the left cylinder head". Remove the left cylinder head timing cover.

When unscrewing the bolts (arrows, Fig. 5.127) the camshafts should be held from turning by the hexagon. Loosen the bolts (arrows) securing the exhaust and intake actuators.

Prepare a set of devices "11.9.460" for fixing camshafts, which includes:
  • "11.9.461" for fixing the intake camshaft;
  • "11.9.462" for fixing the exhaust camshaft;
  • "11.9.463" (bracket with screw).

Install the "11.9.461" tool on the intake camshaft (fig. 5.128) and adjust the intake camshaft so that the "11.9.461" device fits onto the cylinder head without gaps. Install the "11.9.463" device by screwing its screw (1) into the threaded hole for the oil line and tighten it by hand.

Install the «11.9.461» tool on the intake camshaft (fig. 5.128) and adjust the intake camshaft so…

Tighten the new M10x1.0 bolt for fastening the intake actuator unit to a torque of 80 N·m (8.0 kgf·m), while holding the camshaft from turning by the hexagon.

Loosen the bolt and remove tools "11.9.463" and "11.9.461" from the intake camshaft.

Install the "11.9.462" tool on the exhaust camshaft (fig. 5.129) and adjust the exhaust camshaft so that the "11.9.462" tool fits onto the cylinder head without gaps.

Install the device "11.9.463" and screw its screw (1) into the threaded hole for the oil line and tighten it by hand.

Tighten the M10x1.0 bolt (2) securing the exhaust actuator to a torque of 80 N·m (8.0 kgf·m), while holding the camshaft from turning by the hexagon. Loosen the bolt (1), remove the tools "11.9.463" and "11.9.462" from the exhaust camshaft.

Remove the device "11.9.190" (fig. 5.130). Turn the crankshaft by the central bolt in the direction of rotation by two full turns (720°) until the piston of the 1st cylinder is again set to the TDC position at the end of the compression stroke. Fix the torsional vibration damper using the device "11.9.190" with the piston of the 1st cylinder in the TDC position at the end of the compression stroke.

Remove the device «11.9.190» (fig. 5.130). Turn the crankshaft by the central bolt in the direction…

Install the device "11.9.461" (see fig. 5.128) on the intake camshaft and check the valve timing adjustment.

The valve timing is adjusted correctly if the "11.9.461" tool fits onto the cylinder head without gaps or is raised relative to the exhaust side by a maximum of 0.5 mm.

Remove tool "11.9.461" from the intake camshaft.

Install the device "11.9.462" (fig. 5.129) on the exhaust camshaft and check the valve timing adjustment.

The valve timing is adjusted correctly if the "11.9.462" tool fits onto the cylinder head without gaps or is raised relative to the exhaust side by a maximum of 0.5 mm.

Remove all fixtures and assemble the engine.
