Automatic transmission — general information (BMW X5 E53)

On BMW cars of the X5 series with the E53 body, automatic transmissions (AT) of three models are installed: with engines M57, M62 and N62 model A5S 440Z by ZF (Germany), with engines M54 and M57 model A5S 390G by GM (USA) (Fig. 9.1), with engines M57 and N62 model GA6HP26Z AT models A5S 390G and A5S 440Z have five forward gears and one reverse gear, includes, as a drive, a dynamic torque converter with a locking clutch, and a planetary gearbox. AT model GA6HP26Z has six forward gears and one reverse gear.



The selector lever has seven positions, which are described in detail in the Operation section:

Oil for the torque converter and automatic transmission housing: hypoid ATF oil, filled at the manufacturer's plant and, during the entire period of operation, does not require replacement. Such automatic transmissions have a green sticker indicating the oil brand next to the filler plug.

The automatic transmission of the "A5S 440Z" model uses Esso LT 71 141 oil, and the following oils are also approved for use: Schell ATF Dexron II D-21–666: Mobil ATF 220 D-20104; Total Dextron II D-20356.

The automatic transmission model "A5S 390G" uses oils - ETL 7045; ETL 7045 E; ETL 8072 B and ETL 7045 E.



The automatic transmission model "GA6HP26Z" uses only oil - Shell M-1375.4. The filling capacity of the automatic transmission during a full/partial oil change is:

• "A5S 440Z" - 9.7 / 4.0 l;
• "A5S 390G" - 9.0 / 4.0 l;
• "GA6HP26Z" — 10,1 / –.

Radiator (heat exchanger) automatic transmission oil cooling can be combined with the engine cooling system radiator or performed separately. Determining automatic transmission faults is only possible on electronic diagnostic equipment, the owner has access only to the process of removing, installing the automatic transmission, its individual components and adjusting the gear shift cable.
