Checking/removing and installing the idle air control valve (BMW 5 Series E39)
The idle speed control valve is located at the intake manifold and is connected by hoses before and after the throttle valve pipe.
Loosen the clamp and remove the air intake hose from the throttle body pipe.
Unscrew the fastening throttle valve pipe.
Loosen the oil level indicator guide tube fastening.
Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the idle speed control valve on the intake manifold and pull the valve out in a downward motion.
Press the wire clamp and disconnect the plug from the idle speed control valve. Remove the sealing ring and rubber clamp. Release the clamps and disconnect the hoses.
Connect an ohmmeter to the connector pins on the valve and check the resistance. The prescribed value for terminals 1 and 3 is 40±5 Ω; for terminals 2 and 1 or 2 and 3 - 20±5 Ω.
Connect the electrical plug.
Rotate the valve piston by hand to fully open or close it.
Turn on the ignition. The rotary piston should now take a position where approximately 50% of the cross-section of the hole is open and remain in this position.
Secure the hoses to the valve with clamps. Always replace the seal; to facilitate installation of the sealing ring on the valve, lubricate the valve body with technical petroleum jelly.
Insert the adjustment valve and secure it with bolts. Screw on the oil level indicator guide tube.
Connect the plug to the valve.
Install the throttle body pipe.
Put on the air intake hose and secure with a clamp.
Read the contents of the DME system fault code memory. After troubleshooting, erase the contents of the memory.
Note: In order to weld, the idle speed control valve works, you need to put your hand on the valve. When the engine is running, due to the pulsed voltage supply, the valve should vibrate.
Removal
Loosen the clamp and remove the air intake hose from the throttle body pipe.
Unscrew the fastening throttle valve pipe.
Caution: Do not disconnect the throttle linkage or throttle body heating system hoses.

Resistance check

Connect an ohmmeter to the connector pins on the valve and check the resistance. The prescribed value for terminals 1 and 3 is 40±5 Ω; for terminals 2 and 1 or 2 and 3 - 20±5 Ω.
Dynamic check
Connect the electrical plug.

Rotate the valve piston by hand to fully open or close it.
Turn on the ignition. The rotary piston should now take a position where approximately 50% of the cross-section of the hole is open and remain in this position.
Installation
Secure the hoses to the valve with clamps. Always replace the seal; to facilitate installation of the sealing ring on the valve, lubricate the valve body with technical petroleum jelly.
Insert the adjustment valve and secure it with bolts. Screw on the oil level indicator guide tube.
Connect the plug to the valve.
Install the throttle body pipe.
Put on the air intake hose and secure with a clamp.
Read the contents of the DME system fault code memory. After troubleshooting, erase the contents of the memory.
