Technical characteristics of the starter from BOSCH (BMW X5 E53)

Minimum voltage for traction relay operation is 8.0 V

Minimum brush height – 8.0 mm

Anchor axial clearance – 0.05–0.4 mm

Radial runout in bearings – 0.03 mm

The depth of the groove between the collector plates is 0.5–0.8 mm

Note: The traction relay can be checked without removing the starter from the engine in the following order.


Turn off the engine, set the gearshift lever to neutral and apply the parking brake. Remove the lower protective cover of the engine compartment and briefly short-circuit contacts "30" (+AB) and "50" (ignition switch). The starter drive gear should move forward sharply, a characteristic click should be heard. The traction relay is working properly.
