Exhaust system — design description (BMW X5 E53)

The exhaust system includes an exhaust manifold, a turbocharger (TC), a three-way catalytic converter, extinguishers, an exhaust gas recirculation system, pipelines with system fastening elements on the vehicle body. The M57TU engine is additionally equipped with a particulate filter. The exhaust manifold (Fig. 6.18) has a flange connection with the engine cylinder head on studs, using asbestos-free sealing gaskets (2.5). The exhaust manifold is covered with a heat shield (6).

The catalytic converter used (1) is a so-called three-component catalytic converter based on rare earth metals. Due to their presence, oxidation of carbon oxides (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) occurs, and the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) is reduced.
