Replacing the torsional vibration damper hub (BMW X5 E53)

The removal of the torsional vibration damper hub must be carried out in the following order. Prepare the tools "11.9.454", "11.3.460", "11.9.451", "11.9.452" and "11.9.453".

Remove the decorative casing, electric fan, alternator drive belt, air conditioner compressor drive belt. Remove the front engine sump guard panel and vibration damper.

Screw the tool "11.9.451" (Fig. 5.82) in combination with the tool "11.9.452" to the vibration damper hub and to the oil pan. Loosen the central bolt (1). Remove the tools and the vibration damper hub.

When installing the vibration damper hub, check it and the seal and replace if necessary. Align the groove in the vibration damper hub with the prismatic key. Install the vibration damper hub. Replace the central bolt (1).

Install the magnetized device "11.3.460" on the device "11.9.451" (Fig. 5.83). Select the "0°" position and fix the device "11.9.453" with the clamping screw on the socket head (device "11.3.454").

Tighten the new central bolt (M18x1.5) in four steps:


  • first reception with a torque of 100 N·m (10.0 kgf·m);
  • second step, turn to an angle of 60°;
  • third step, turn to an angle of 60°;
  • fourth step, turn to an angle of 60°.

Note: When turning the central bolt, use the "11.3.460" device and a torque wrench, for which select the "0" position and mark it (arrow) on the socket head. Turn the central bolt to the specified angle.


Assemble the engine.
