Replacing the drive disc/flywheel (BMW X5 E53)
Attention!
- The role of the engine flywheel in a power unit with an automatic transmission is played by the drive disk, the compensating clutch and the automatic transmission torque converter.
- The bolts for fastening the automatic transmission drive disk are distributed around the circumference. The drive disk has a centering sleeve, which ensures its unambiguous (correct) installation position.
- Flywheel mounting bolts (automatic transmission drive disk) distributed around the circumference with a shift, or the flywheel has a centering sleeve, which ensures its unambiguous (correct) installation position.
Removal of the drive disk/flywheel must be carried out in the following order.
Prepare the equipment "11.4.180", "11.9.260" "11.9.263" and "11.9.264". Remove the automatic transmission / manual transmission and clutch.
Automatic transmission
Lock the drive disk (1, Fig. 5.81) with the help of devices "11.9.260", "11.9.263" and "11.9.264". Loosen the mounting bolts (9 pcs.). Loosen and screw in the drive disk mounting bolts only using the "11.4.180" tool. Remove the drive disk (1).

Inspect the drive disk and toothed ring for damage and signs of wear, chipped tooth elements. If any are found, replace the drive disk together with the ring. The toothed ring can only be replaced separately at a service station.
Clean the threaded holes for the drive disk mounting bolts on the crankshaft flange with compressed air.
The drive disk should be installed in the reverse order, while checking the centering sleeve (1) of the crankshaft flange for damage and correct installation. The position of the drive disk is fixed by the position of the centering pin. The pin can only be replaced on the original part - item number 11.22.7.500.307. The holes on the flange and disk must match.
Coat the threaded portion of the new drive disc mounting bolts with engine oil and tighten crosswise in three steps to a final torque of 105 N·m (10.5 kgf·m).
Manual transmission
When replacing the flywheel, with a manual transmission, block it using devices "11.9.260", "11.9.262" and "11.9.263". Unscrew the mounting bolts (9 pcs.). Unscrew and screw in the flywheel mounting bolts only with the tool "11.4.180".
Remove the flywheel and inspect it for damage, signs of wear, and chips. If any are found, replace the flywheel, complete with the ring gear. The ring gear can only be replaced separately at a service station. Clean the threaded holes for the flywheel mounting bolts on the crankshaft flange with compressed air.
The flywheel should be installed in the reverse order, while checking the centering sleeve of the crankshaft flange for damage and correct installation. The position of the flywheel is fixed with a centering pin. The pin can only be replaced on the original part. The holes on the flange and the flywheel disk must match.
Do not wash the new drive disk mounting bolts; tighten them crosswise in three steps to a final torque of 120 N·m (12.0 kgf·m).
