Attention!
- All work on the exhaust system must only be carried out on a cold engine, due to the risk of burns.
- The exhaust gas catalytic converter is shock-resistant.
The main criterion for replacing the elements of the exhaust system is its tightness at the end of the replacement work.
The exhaust system weighs about 40 kg, you should work with an assistant. Exhaust system components such as exhaust manifold, front (or intermediate) and rear (additional) mufflers are connected by detachable connections, so they can be replaced separately during the repair process. Front muffler (1, see fig. 3.30) connected to the outlet pipelines by a welded joint. Checking the tightness of the exhaust system must be carried out especially in the case when it is difficult to start the engine, the engine vibrates at idle, increases the speed in jerks. This indicates a leak in the exhaust system between the engine exhaust manifold and the sensors (5, 6, see fig. 3.29) oxygen content in the exhaust gas, which are installed before the catalytic converters.
Checking the exhaust system must be carried out on a cold or slightly warm engine in the following order. Start the engine and cover the outlet of the exhaust system to the atmosphere with a cloth (gagged). Check for possible leaks through the flange connections, by the noise of the exhaust gas and by the formation of bubbles after spraying suspicious places with a special fireproof spray.
