Attention!
- Replace the coolant only on a cold engine, due to the risk of getting burned by steam.
- Protect the generator from contamination.
- Place a container to collect the coolant at the drain point.
- On a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission, unscrew the cap on the expansion tank of the cooling system radiator.
- Only coolant certified by BMW should be added through the expansion tank of the cooling system.
- The drained coolant must be disposed of.
- The mark on the expansion tank of the cooling system shows the maximum level of liquid in the system at a temperature of 20°C.
Draining the coolant must be done in the following order: Remove the soundproofing casing, the engine auxiliary protection panel and the stiffening plate.
Remove the cap on the expansion tank of the cooling system. Unscrew the threaded plug (1, Fig. 6.97) drain hole at the bottom of the cooling system radiator.
Unscrew the plug (10, see Fig. 6.2) drain hole on the cylinder block on the right side.
Loosen the screws (1 and 2, Fig. 6.98), designed to remove air.
Drain the coolant and dispose of it. Replace the cylinder block plug sealing gasket (M14x1.5) and tighten it to 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m).
Filling the coolant must be done through the neck of the expansion tank in the following order. Replace the sealing gasket of the drain hole at the bottom of the radiator and tighten its plug to a torque of 2.5 N·m (0.25 kgf·m).
Turn on the ignition. Set the heater control to the maximum temperature and the fan to the lowest speed. This opens the valves of the heater unit and starts its additional pump. Unscrew the screw (1 and 2) to remove air from the engine cooling system.
Slowly pour coolant through the neck of the radiator expansion tank to the maximum mark. Wait until coolant without air bubbles starts to come out through the ventilation hole of the radiator expansion tank. Tighten the ventilation hole plug to a torque of 8.0 N·m (0.8 kgf·m).
Close the expansion tank of the cooling system. Bleed the engine cooling system and check it for leaks. Start the engine, warm it up to operating temperature and check the tightness of the cooling system and the level in the expansion tank of the cooling system.
