Disconnect the control unit, contact "50" (1, Fig. 5.183). Unscrew the nut (3) and disconnect the positive battery wire from the starter, contact "30".
Release the "+" wire of the battery from the holders. Unscrew the nuts and disconnect the wires of the starter traction relay control circuit. Unscrew the bolts (arrows, Fig. 5.184) fastening the starter to the gearbox housing. Disconnect the starter from the gearbox support and remove it.
Check the drive gear and the starter crown gear for damage, replace the starter if necessary. When installing, tighten the wire fastening nuts to the following torque:
- M5 – 5.0 N·m (0.5 kgf·m);
- M6 – 7.0 N·m (0.7 kgf·m);
- M8 – 13.0 N·m (1.3 kgf·m).
Tighten the starter mounting bolts (M10) to 45 N·m (4.5 kgf·m). Install the removed parts on the vehicle engine.
The starter solenoid relay should be replaced in the same order as on the M54 engine.
