Replacing the lower part of the engine oil pan (BMW X5 E53)

Replacement of the lower part of the engine oil sump (sump) should be carried out in the following order.

Unscrew the oil filter cap, the oil will drain into the engine sump. Remove the stiffening plate, unscrew the oil drain plug and drain the oil from the engine. Send the oil for disposal.

Disconnect the SS (1, Fig. 5.63) switch of the oil level indicator, if necessary remove the oil level sensor. Mark and unscrew the bolts (arrows), remove the lower part (pan) of the oil sump.

When installing, clean the sealing surfaces, replace the sealing gasket, sealing ring, install the oil level sensor and mounting bolts, tightening the bolts to the following torque:
  • M6 (8.8) – 10 N·m (1.0 kgf·m);
  • M8 (8.8) – 22 Nm (2.2 kgf·m).

Do not overtighten the bolts.

When replacing the lower part of the oil pan, it is necessary to reposition the oil level sensor and replace the sealing ring.
