Replacing the upper timing belt covers (BMW X5 E53)

The design of the upper timing belt covers is shown in Figure 5.66.

Removal of the left upper timing belt cover of the engine on the cylinder bank 5–8 must be carried out in the following order.

Remove the left cylinder head cover and both left solenoid valves. Loosen the bolt (arrow) and remove the holder. Remove the wire from the holder and mark the location of the bolts.

Loosen the mounting bolts, remove the timing belt cover (3) and the profile rubber-metal gasket (4).

The installation of the upper left timing belt cover of the engine should be carried out in the reverse order, while it is necessary to clean the sealing surface from the remains of the old seal on the cover (3, Fig. 5.67) Timing belt.

Check the centering bushings for damage and correct installation position, replace if necessary. Clean the sealing surface from the remains of the old seal on the cylinder head. The sealing surfaces of the cover and head must be clean from dirt and oil.



Install a new profile sealing gasket (4, see Fig. 5.66), paying special attention to the correct position during installation.

Removal of the right upper timing belt cover on the cylinder side 1–4 must be carried out in the following order.

Remove the right cylinder head cover and vacuum pump. Remove both right solenoid valves and remove the cable from the holder.

Mark the location of the bolts, unscrew the bolts (5 and 6, see Fig. 5.66) and remove the timing belt cover (1). Remove the profile rubber-metal gasket (2).

The installation of the upper right timing belt cover should be carried out in the reverse order, while it is necessary to clean the sealing surface from the remains of the old seal on the timing belt cover (1).

Check the centering bushings (1, Fig. 5.68) for damage and correct installation position, replace if necessary. Clean the sealing surface (2) from the remains of the old seal on the cylinder head. The sealing surfaces of the cover and head must be free of dirt and oil.
