Removing the seal of the head cover on the side of 5-8 cylinders
Removing the head cover seal on cylinder bank 5 to 8 must be carried out in the following order. Disconnect «–» terminal from AB. Remove cover with BMW logo, trim cover and acoustic cover. Remove the center baffle of the engine accessory compartment and the ignition coil cover.
Release holder (1, fig. 5.34) wires with wires. Take out the valve (2) ventilation of the fuel tank from the holder.
Unlock and disconnect the loops from the sensors. Loosen the screws and remove the sealing element (2, fig. 5.35). Remove sensors (3 and 4). Remove ignition coils.
Disconnect both wires at «mass» (arrows, fig. 5.36). Unlock and disconnect vent hose. Open cable box (1) and remove the cable from the holder. Remove the left eccentric shaft drive motor.
Remove screws (arrows, fig. 5.37) and remove the spacer (3) upward movement.
Remove the distribution line outlet. Pull out the oil dipstick. Mark the cylinder head cover bolts, as they have different lengths.
Remove bolts (1–4, fig. 5.38) and remove the cylinder head cover.
Note. The cylinder head cover and the cylinder head cover gasket are made of such material that they can be fitted to the contour of the cylinder head.
Installation of the seal for the left cylinder head cover must be carried out in reverse order, while cleaning the sealing grooves in the cylinder head cover.
Replace o-ring (1, fig. 5.39) under the spacer and press it into the cylinder head cover. Pay attention to the direction when installing the spacer O-ring, the groove in the O-ring must face outwards.
Replace seal. Loosely apply and align the gasket to the groove in the cover. Fix the gasket in the rear, rounded corners and install it without tension in the groove of the cover. Replace high voltage leads.
Lubricate the rubber seals on the inlet (1, fig. 5.40) high tension grease to facilitate sliding and install them into the cylinder head. When installing the cylinder head cover, the high voltage bushings must be flush with the cylinder head cover.
Clean the sealing surfaces from seal residues and apply a sealant of the type «Drei Bond 1209» (arrow, fig. 5.41).
Clean the surfaces to be sealed from seal residues and apply a uniform, thin layer of sealant type «Drei Bond 1209» (arrows, fig. 5.42).
Replace sealing elements (1, fig. 5.43). Pay attention to the correct position of the gasket on the sides and rear of the cylinder head.
Attention! The cylinder head cover bolts are different, do not confuse them.
The sealing gasket and spacer bushings of the fastening bolts are interconnected. If the cylinder head cover was leaking, the problem can only be repaired with a new gasket and new mounting bolts.
Replace bolts (3, see fig. 5.38) fixing the cylinder head. Install without finally tightening the bolts (1, 2 and 3), expose the cover and tighten the bolts (1, 2 and 3) fastenings in a cross order from the middle to the edges.
Replace sealing element (2, see fig. 5.43) and o-rings on sensors (3 and 4).
Removing the head cover seal on the side of 1-4 cylinders
Removing the head cover seal on cylinder bank 1-4 must be carried out in the following order. Disconnect «–» terminal AB. Remove cover with BMW logo, trim cover, acoustic cover and center bulkhead of engine accessory compartment. Remove the electronics box cover and the box seal. Remove the ignition coil cover and air filter housing (without air intake hood), suction hose with air flow meter.
Unlock and disconnect the loops from the sensors, unscrew the screws and remove the sealing element of the loop (2, fig. 5.44). Remove sensors (3 and 4) and ignition coils.
Disconnect both wires at «mass» (arrows, fig. 5.45). Unlock and disconnect vent hose. Open cable box (1) and remove the cable from the holder. Remove the right eccentric shaft drive motor.
Remove screws (arrows, fig. 5.46) and remove the spacer (3) upward movement.
Remove the distribution line outlet. Mark the bolts of the cylinder head cover, as they have different lengths. Remove bolts (1, 2, 3 and 4, fig. 5.47) fasteners and remove the cylinder head cover.
Note. The cylinder head cover and the cylinder head cover gasket are made of such material that they can be fitted to the contour of the cylinder head.
The installation of the right cylinder head cover seal should be carried out in the reverse order, while it is necessary to follow the procedure similar to the left cylinder block.
