Fuel injection system — design description (BMW X5 E53)

Attention! It is allowed to disconnect wires from the battery terminals only when it is provided for by the work procedure. When disconnecting the battery, the fault codes, audio equipment settings and anti-theft system locks entered into the ECU-KSUD memory device are erased.

Disconnection of plug connections (PC) should be carried out only with the ignition off.

In case of malfunction of the injection and ignition system, before proceeding to determine the faults in the ECU-KSUD or other control element, check the condition of the SS. The "N62" engine is equipped with a complex control system - KSUD of the electronic type of the model "Bosch Motronic ME 9.2.1" (Fig. 5.23) with a contactless electronic ignition timing control system that takes into account anti-knock control of the combustion process by cylinders. Both control subsystems are combined by a single electronic control unit (ECU), made in the form of a specialized digital microcomputer, which ensures control of all engine operating processes in the optimal parameters of power, economy and toxicity of the vehicle. It is also responsible for controlling the automatic transmission, brake system elements and a number of other functions.

Engine crankshaft speed at idle speed is 750–850 min⁻¹.

The carbon monoxide (CO) content in the exhaust gas is automatically maintained within specified limits. In the event of misfiring in one of the cylinders due to a malfunction of the primary winding circuit of the ignition coil, the ECU-KSUD switches off the injector of this cylinder, which prevents the neutralizer from failing due to a large amount of unburned working mixture getting into it. The engine has two sensors for measuring the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. One is installed in front of the neutralizer and acts as a regulator. The second is installed behind the neutralizer - to monitor the operation of the neutralizer. In total, two neutralizers are installed, for cylinders 1-4 and for cylinders 5-8.

The content of carbon monoxide (CO) in exhaust gas with an exhaust gas neutralizer is 0.2–0.12%, without an exhaust gas neutralizer – 0.5–1.5%.
