Preparing for a car trip

Before getting into the car, make sure that its windows, mirrors and lights are clean. Check the condition of the wheels, look under the car and make sure there are no fluid leaks.

Check engine fluid levels according to the maintenance schedule (engine oil, coolant and brake fluids), and also the windshield washer fluid level (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

Once in the vehicle, perform the following operations:

1. Close and lock all doors;

2. Adjust the seat position (see section Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)) and rear view mirrors;

3. Make sure that the external lighting fixtures are working properly;

4. Check the operation of the devices;

5. When turning on the ignition, check the serviceability of the K/L located in the instrument cluster;

6. Fasten your seat belt and remind your passengers to do so;

7. Release the parking brake and make sure that the corresponding K/L goes out.

Starting and stopping the engine

First, make sure the parking brake is fully engaged and all auxiliary systems are disengaged.

On models with AT move the AT mode selector lever to the position "P" or "N" and press the brake pedal. On models with manual transmission depress the clutch pedal.

Turn the ignition key to the "START" position and release it immediately - the starter will operate until the engine starts, after which the starter will turn off automatically. When the starter is on, do not press the gas pedal, except in cases where the engine starts with difficulty at very low or very high temperatures, as well as in summer, when starting a warm engine within half an hour after it has been turned off. If the battery is not charged enough, the starting process will not begin or may be interrupted, in which case use an auxiliary battery.

Let the engine idle for a long time before driving (at least 30 s). Until the engine has warmed up, avoid running it at high speeds and under heavy load, especially in cold weather.

After a long period of high load on the engine, do not turn it off immediately, let it run for a few minutes at idle speed to avoid a sharp temperature drop in different areas of the engine. To turn off the engine, turn the key in the ignition switch to the position "1" or "0".
