Replacing the sealing gasket of the rear cover of the gearbox (BMW X5 E53)

If there is increased oil consumption or oil leakage in the area of the rear axle gearbox, it is necessary to check the gearbox seals (fig. 14.21).



The asbestos-free sealing gasket (2) of the rear cover of the gearbox must be replaced in the following order. Drain the oil and remove the rear axle gearbox. Unscrew the bolts (3) and remove them together with the spring washers (4)

Remove the lid (fig. 14.22) rear axle gearbox. Clean the sealing surfaces of the crankcase and rear axle gearbox cover.



Replace the sealing gasket (2, see Fig. 14.21) gearbox housing. Bolts (M10;8.8) tighten the cover fasteners to a torque of 45 N·m (4.5 kgf·m), bolts (M10; 10.9) – with a torque of 55 N·m (5.5 kgf·m), M10 bolts ("215k") with a torque of 90 N·m (9.0 kgf·m).
