The tire has its own marking; when choosing tires, it is important to decipher it correctly (Fig. 15.2).

So the marking P 225/55 R 18 96 V M+S is read:
  • P – passenger car index (for USA only);
  • 225 – nominal width of the tire section in mm;
  • 55 – aspect ratio (the height of the tire cross-section is 50% of the width);
  • R – tire construction – radial;
  • 18 – rim seat diameter in inches;
  • 96 – permissible load characteristic (96 = 710 kg);
  • V – speed class, km/h (P-150; Q-160; S-180; T-190; H-210; V-240; W-270; Y-300; ZR-over 240).
  • M+S – winter tire index.

Attention! If there is a combination of "M+S" between the numbers "18" and "V", this indicates that the tire has a winter tread pattern. For cars "BMW-Grupen" it is recommended to use tires with a load rating of 93–97, which corresponds to a load range of 650–730 kgf.

The date of manufacture of the tire is indicated in the code of the manufacturer, the marking DOT CUL2 UM8 0501 TUBELESS is read:
  • DOT – Dpartament of Transportation (US Department of Transportation);
  • CU – manufacturer code;
  • L2 – tire size;
  • UM8 – tire model;
  • 0504 – date of manufacture (Week 05, 2004.)
  • TUBELESS – tubeless tire (TUBETYPE – tube tire).

The following tires and disks are installed on the X5 series car model with the E53 body:

  • "3.0i" – 235/65 R17 H (7.5Jx17);
  • "4.4i" – 235/65 R17 N (7.5Jx17);
  • "4,4і" – 255/55 R18 V (8,5Jx18);
  • "4.6i" (front) – 275/40 R20 W (9.5Jx20);
  • "4.6i" (rear) – 315/35 R20 W (10.5Jx20);
  • "4.8i" (front) – 275/40 R20 W (9.5Jx20);
  • "4.8i" (rear) – 315/35 R20 W (10.5Jx20);
  • "3,0d" – 235/65 R17 H (7,5Jx17).

Steel wheels and aluminum wheels:
  • permissible axial runout of the tire on the wheel disk, no more than - 1.8 mm;
  • permissible radial runout of the tire on the wheel disk, no more than - 1.6 mm;
  • radial runout of the disk rim, no more than – 0.8 mm;
  • axial runout of the disk rim, no more than – 0.8 mm;
  • permissible residual imbalance, no more than 4 g.

Alloy wheels:
  • permissible axial runout of the tire on the wheel disk, no more than - 1.3 mm;
  • permissible radial runout of the tire on the wheel rim, no more than - 1.1 mm;
  • radial runout of the disk rim, no more than 0.3 mm;
  • axial runout of the disk rim, no more than 0.3 mm;
  • permissible residual imbalance, no more than 4 g.

If the front tires are clearly worn out, it is recommended to swap the front wheels with the rear ones. In this case, the front suspension should always be fitted with newer tires with a clearer tread pattern. All four wheels should be of the same type with the same tread pattern. When replacing a tubeless tire, for safety reasons, be sure to replace the valve.

Attention! It is necessary to avoid prolonged contact of the tire with oils and lubricants.

Constant use of a vehicle with anti-skid chains installed sharply reduces the life of the tires.
