Attention! To remove the front axle gearbox, it is necessary to lower the front axle beam.
When lifting the engine by 5 mm (or 10 - 12 mm, with M62) ensure that neither piping nor wiring harnesses will be damaged by lifting devices (chains).
Do not press the wheel drive shaft out of the flange.
During removal and installation, the wheel drive shaft and the swivel bearing form a single unit.
Replace sealing ring. Replacing the front axle gearbox is given for a car equipped with an engine of the model «M54», differences for a complete set of engines «M57», «M62» And «N62» given as the material is presented.
Note. Front wheel alignment measurement is not required.
Upon completion of work, check the oil level in the front axle gearbox. Replacing the front axle gearbox must be carried out with an assistant in the following order.
Prepare fixtures for use: «00.0.200», «00.0.201», «00.0.202», «00.0.204», «00.0.208», «00.2.030», «11.0.000», «11.0.020», «31.2.220». «51.2.170».
Disconnect «–» terminal from AB. Remove the heater baffle and lower the front axle beam. Drain the oil from the front axle gearbox.
Slightly raise the damper locking bracket, while moving it up and, holding the hood, disconnect the damper. Fully open the hood using the tool «51.2.170», lock the hood in the open position.
Remove nozzle cover («M54»), figure 13.4. Loosen the screws and remove the acoustic cover.
Rotate the closures of the acoustic cover by 90° («M62»), rice. 13.5, and remove it.
Remove the upper part of the air filter housing together with the air flow meter («M54»).
Assemble fixture «11.0.020» to fix the engine «M54» And «M57», as shown in Figure 13.6. For engines «M62» And «N62» use fixture «11.0.000». The tool supports must rest on the pins in both wings of the body, and their fastening bolts must be tightened. Attach the tool to the front and rear engine lifting eyes.
Remove left and right engine cover («M57») and disconnect the vacuum hose (2, fig. 13.7) from the engine mount, right and left.
The upper nuts of the left and right engine mounts are loosened. Using fixture screw «00.0.200» raise the engine «M54» or «M57» by 5 mm, engine «M62» or «N62» by 10–12 mm.
Remove the front panel of the protective casing of the engine compartment, the stiffening plate and the front propeller shaft. Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering box.
When removing and installing the drive shaft (1, fig. 13.8) wheels and swivel (2) form a single node.
Remove left and right swivel bearings with wheel drive shafts. Support the front axle beam with a transverse wooden beam using the tools «00.2.030» And «31.2.220» (pic. 13.9).
Detach the front axle beam from the front side member.
Screw in the fixture «31.1.150» instead of original bolts (2. see fig. 13.2) approximately 20 mm and lower the front axle beam. Remove the left engine mount and disconnect the pressure reducer air hose.
Note. As a fixture «31.1.150» can use the front axle beam bolts of series cars «E38» with part no. 9.900.223.
Remove bolts (1, fig. 13.10) and carefully remove the front axle gearbox. Remove mounting ring (9, see fig. 13.3) and sealing ring (8).
Insert a new O-ring into the groove (8) and apply grease to it to facilitate sliding.
The installation of the front axle gearbox should be carried out in reverse order, while it is necessary to install the mounting ring (9) close to sealing ring (8). mounting ring (9) protects the o-ring (8) from damage when installing the front axle gearbox at the engine oil pan.
When installing the front axle gearbox on the engine oil pan, a mounting ring is required (9) push on the o-ring (8) and leave it in that position.
Tighten the engine oil pan connection bolts to 55 Nm (5.5 kgf·m).
Unscrew the plug of the crankcase of the front axle gearbox and pour oil into it (0.6–0.7 l), along the lower edge of the filler plug. Install a new plug gasket and tighten it to 60 Nm (6.0 kgf·m).
