Replacing the torque converter oil seal (BMW X5 E53)
Automatic transmission type "A5S 390R"
Replace the oil seal of the torque converter (GTKM) automatic transmission type "A5S 390R" must be carried out in the following order. Prepare accessories "00.1.450", "00.2.550", "24.0.180" and "24.4.000", remove the automatic transmission. Using the "24.0.180" tool (Fig. 9.44), install the automatic transmission on the "00.1.450" assembly stand.

Screw the "24.4.000" devices into the mounting sockets of the GTCM, remove the GTCM and set it aside in a vertical position (arrow, Fig. 9.45).

Replace the GTCM oil seal by unscrewing the oil seal plate fastening screws. Using the "00.5.010" tool (Fig. 9.46), remove the oil seal (1) from the GTCM bell-shaped casing.

Lubricate the working edges of the new oil seal with automatic transmission oil. Install the oil seal and evenly tighten both screws of its mounting plate to a torque of 9.0 N·m (0.9 kgf·m). Push the GTCM through the oil seal onto the automatic transmission shaft until it stops.
Press the GTCM into the bell-shaped housing of the automatic transmission with your hands. In doing so, make sure that the groove of the GTCM hub engages with the oil pump drive shaft leash, and that the GTCM has noticeably moved inside the housing.
Using the "00.2.550" device (Fig. 9.47), determine the distance between the mating plane of the automatic transmission and the surface (1) of the threaded hole of the GTCM. The GTCM is installed correctly if the measured value at each of the three points exceeds 30 mm.

Upon completion of the work, check the oil level in the automatic transmission and, if necessary, restore it.
Automatic transmission type "A5S 440R"
The replacement of the torque converter oil seal of the automatic transmission type "A5S 440R" should be carried out using the technology similar to the automatic transmission "A5S 390R", while it is necessary to use the devices "00.5.010" to remove the oil seal and "24.4.100" - to install the oil seal. In this case, use a thin screwdriver to remove the retaining ring (1, Fig. 9.48).

When installing the oil seal (14, see Fig. 9.36) pay attention to the presence of a corrugated washer (15) underneath it.

Automatic transmission type "GA6HP26Z"
The replacement of the torque converter seal of the automatic transmission type "GA6HP26Z" should be carried out using technology similar to the automatic transmission "A5S 440Z", and it is necessary to use the following devices: "24.2.353", "24.2.351" and "24.2.352" for removing the oil seal and "24.2.360" for installing the oil seal.
