Replacing piston rings (BMW X5 E53)

Note: The markings may not be visible on used rings. Place the removed rings in the cylinder numbering sequence and their position. Install new pistons only with new piston rings.


Replacement of piston rings should be carried out in the same order as for the M54 engine.

When installing the rings, ensure that the "TOP" mark on the ring plane faces the piston bottom (Fig. 4.88).

The axial clearance of the compression rings should be 0.020–0.060 mm (M62V44) or 0.020–0.070 mm for the first ring and 0.020–0.070 mm for the second ring (M62V46), oil scraper ring – 0.020–0.060 mm (M62V46).

The gap in the compression ring lock should be 0.10–0.30 mm for all engines, and the oil scraper ring – 0.20–0.90 mm (M62B44) and 0.25–0.50 mm (M62B46).
