On a vehicle with an M54 engine, unscrew the bolts and remove the clamp securing the exhaust system's inlet pipe. While holding the clamping sleeve (1, Fig. 9.22), loosen the clamping nut (2).

Holding the rope (1, Fig. 9.23) from turning by the hex head (2), unscrew the nut (3). Remove the cable from the mounting bracket.

To access the bolts that secure the automatic transmission to the drive disc, unscrew the bolt (1, Fig. 9.24) and remove the protective plug (2) of the hole in the lower part of the cylinder block crankcase.

Take measures to prevent the torque converter from slipping out. To do this, install the devices "24.4.131" and "24.4.137" (Fig. 9.25) into the automatic transmission housing window with the "M54" engine, and the devices "24.4.131" and "24.4.135" (Fig. 9.26) with the "M57" engine, and tighten it.

Tighten the two bolts securing the torque converter to the engine drive disk with a torque of 10–15 N·m (1.0–1.5 kgf·m). Unscrew the "24.2.300" tool (see fig. 9.21) and install the third torque converter mounting bolt to the engine drive disk. Tighten all torque converter mounting bolts crosswise to a torque of 45 N·m (4.5 kgf·m).

Connect the automatic transmission and the engine. Screw in the mounting bolts, together with the washers, and pre-tighten them, one at a time, to a torque of 20 N·m (2.0 kgf·m). Further tighten the bolts that secure the automatic transmission to the engine in several steps, crosswise, with the final torque specified above.
